Public Health Nurse
"I [work] with a local health department. I spend most of my time working as a prenatal care coordinator with the goal of improving health outcomes for at-risk pregnant women and their families. I work primarily with underserved populations (e.g. low-income, mentally ill, and/or abused women)."
WHAT SHE DOES FOR LOVE: "In my work life, I've found a strong sense of purpose in empowering women to take control of the health and well-being of themselves and their families. I love fostering a sense of ability and accomplishment in women who are used to feeling powerless. In my personal life, I love adventure travel with my husband. Seeking out and sharing new experiences with loved ones (from SUP [stand up paddleboarding] to zip lining) helps me stay fresh and optimistic."
HER STYLE + BEAUTY: "My presence is the most meaningful part of my personal style. It's imperative that I reflect compassion and non-judgement, allowing people to feel comfortable sharing their stories with me. A genuine smile and full attention are integral to letting people know that I'm fully present with and for them."
HER 2015 GOAL: "Climb another mountain (the literal kind)!"
A LADY SHE ADMIRES: "Margaret Sanger! She was a champion for women's empowerment through the recognition of reproductive rights as the foundation of gender equality. The ability to choose if/when to have children has far-reaching implications for the health and well-being of women and their families, from decreasing mortality to improving academic potential. Sanger's work helped pass legislation that made contraception legal, a prerequisite for achieving gender equality in our society."
