Creative Director at BOOKER

"I'm the creative director of BOOKER, which is my RTW contemporary brand located here in NYC. I am also in the middle of launching a denim line called WID (worn in denim) with Angela Denae, as well as a active lifestyle brand called L5 with the owners of Body and Pole."

WHAT SHE DOES FOR LOVE: "I love to dance! I've been dancing my whole life, so it's a must for me to move my body in some kind of way everyday! It definitely helps to keep my creativity flowing and keeps me super-grounded. Over the last few years I've taking up aerial arts, with a focus on pole. I'm obsessed with it and train 5-6 times a week for 3-4 hours a day! I also have a passion for everything motorcycle-related and enjoy taking my Ducati out for a spin around NYC."

HER 2015 GOAL: "The biggest goal I'm working on for 2015 is my first presentation for fashion week this September showcasing BOOKER. Also, launching the two other projects successfully! I would also like to learn some motorcycle tricks this summer. You never see anyone standing up on the bike in a full split riding down Bedford Ave -- I want to be the first!"

A LADY SHE ADMIRES: "I admire my older sister, Mataji Booker for her undying love for creating music and her 30-year dedication to dance and ballet."

WHY SHE'S A LADY GUN: "Jameelah is a lady gun because creates womenswear that empowers women to be strong, beautiful and wild."

ON HER BIGGEST CHALLENGE STARTING HER BUSINESS: "When starting BOOKER, my biggest challenge was financial stability and sourcing. I'm working with one of the most expensive mediums (leather), so it took a lot of hustling for me to find the perfect leather quality that I felt was best to serve to be both fashionable and functional. Most leather hides run high so it took me months of looking at different vendors to get the right price for the perfect leather. I've struggled with finding the right sample rooms who could produce the quality of workmanship I require for my garments. It's important to me to get the best quality the market has to offer with anything BOOKER. I want the best for my customers and I will always hustle to get the best for my brand!"

ON LAUNCHING THREE DIFFERENT CLOTHING LINES: "All three lines come from different interests I have in my life, which makes the design and overall vision of each collection really easy for me to conceive. BOOKER started from my interest in motorcycles and motorcycle culture; WID comes from my interest in denim and working as a denim specialist for the last couple of years; and L5 comes from my love of being a dancer and aerial artist and wanting to be fashionable in my movement. Every brand is something that is very special and personal to me, which makes the design process and vision very clear for me. All three do share the common message of making women feel confident in their clothes. I want to empower others and I'm lucky I have three different collections to help spread that message."

ON THE MOST REWARDING PART OF HER BUSINESS: "For me, owning my own business is the key to my freedom. Freedom to expressing my own vision and showcasing my creativity. No amount of money or fame could ever replace the freedom I feel to finally be able to express my passion."
